Director Allen Hatton
Allen Hatton began his love for music while in high school. There he involved himself in everything that was available to him i.e. chorus, orchestra, band. He was a good trumpet player, but a gifted singer. Soon, Allen was sought out by local top 40 bands. Later, he performed for two years as lead singer for a popular 8 piece rock group called “America's Children.” Allen went on to attend Morehead State University and the University of Louisville as a music performance major.
It was in 1974, that Allen, his brother and two other singers formed the "Bluegrass Student Union." In 1978, they earned Gold Medals as International Champions and for the next 32 years traveled extensively performing for audiences throughout the United States, and several foreign countries. In 1984, they were the featured entertainment at all of the White House Christmas parties which culminated in an Oval Office performance and photo session with then President Ronald Reagan. Over the years, they continually proved to be the groundbreaking sound in this “a cappella” genre and produced five successful recordings.
Allen has been the musical director for The New Horizon Chorus since our inception. His vocal expertise in the “a cappella” style serves us well, as does his exceptional leadership skills, superb teaching methods, and impeccable musical taste. In addition, Allen is well known for his songwriting skills, interpretive prowess, and artistry for his own solo work. Allen also shares his directing talents with the multi-International Champion Derby City Chorus, a Metro Louisville community based women’s ensemble. Both ensembles are fortunate to have such a master musician at the helm.
